Virgin Atlantic Pioneers Sustainable Aviation Fuel with Historic Transatlantic Flight

In a groundbreaking move, Virgin Atlantic has successfully completed the first transatlantic flight of a large passenger plane powered exclusively by sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). This momentous achievement marks a significant step towards a greener future for air travel and sets a new benchmark for the aviation industry.

The historic flight, operating a Boeing 787 from London’s Heathrow Airport to New York’s JFK Airport, utilized 50 tonnes of SAF, a blend of 88% waste fats and 12% corn-based by-products. This demonstration flight, supported by government funding, underscores the industry’s commitment to exploring environmentally friendly alternatives and reducing its carbon footprint.

SAF is considered a key tool in the aviation sector’s efforts to achieve net-zero emissions. While planes using SAF still emit carbon, the industry contends that the “lifecycle emissions” of these fuels can be up to 70% lower than traditional fossil fuels.

This groundbreaking flight is the culmination of meticulous testing and collaboration between various stakeholders, including Virgin Atlantic, engine maker Rolls-Royce, and energy giant BP. Although the flight does not carry paying passengers, it serves as a powerful testament to the feasibility and potential of SAF-powered commercial aviation.

Virgin Atlantic’s CEO, Shai Weiss, hailed the achievement, stating that it proves “fossil-derived fuel can be replaced by sustainable aviation fuel.” He acknowledged the current challenges of limited SAF supply and higher costs associated with alternative fuels.

Despite these challenges, Virgin Atlantic founder Sir Richard Branson emphasized the importance of initiating the shift towards SAF, acknowledging that widespread adoption will take time. The industry envisions SAF as the most effective tool available to achieve its emissions reduction targets.

Virgin Atlantic’s successful transatlantic flight using 100% SAF represents a notable milestone in the aviation industry’s pursuit of sustainability. Experts, however, caution that alternative solutions, such as e-fuels and hydrogen, will be necessary for comprehensive decarbonisation in the future.
