Soaring Donkey Prices in Pakistan Sparked by High Chinese Demand

The price of donkeys in Pakistan has climbed to as much as Rs. 300,000, driven by increasing demand from China. Donkey hides, which are used in Chinese cosmetics and traditional medicine, have become a sought-after commodity, pushing prices to record levels.

A report by Express Tribune highlights that local buyers are finding it difficult to afford donkeys due to the price surge, shrinking domestic trade. Traders are now primarily focused on exporting donkey hides to China to meet this growing demand.

The rising prices have affected local communities in Pakistan, where donkeys are often used for transportation and labor. Farmers and laborers are struggling to cope with the higher costs, which have limited their ability to purchase these animals.

Pakistan’s Senate Standing Committee on Commerce, recognizing the growing demand, recommended in July 2024 that the country begin exporting live donkeys to China, not just hides. While the export of donkey hides is currently unrestricted, the government is also working on developing guidelines for exporting donkey meat.
