Starlink License Application in Progress
Starlink, Elon Musk’s innovative satellite internet service, is navigating regulatory challenges in Pakistan. During a National Assembly briefing, PTA Chairman disclosed that Starlink applied for a license on February 24, 2022. However, additional steps, including mandatory registrations with SECP and PSB, remain incomplete, delaying the launch.
Government Clearance Essential for Launch
The PTA emphasized that licensing will only proceed once all regulatory protocols are fulfilled. Starlink assured the committee of its commitment to adhering to government policies and avoiding unauthorized operations.
SUPARCO’s Role in Space Technology Regulation
In light of Starlink’s entry, the committee suggested involving SUPARCO to ensure proper regulation of satellite services in Pakistan. Questions were also raised regarding PTA’s delegation of responsibilities to other bodies.
Elon Musk’s Response to Starlink Queries
On platform X, a Pakistani user appealed to Musk to launch Starlink, highlighting its potential to uplift underserved communities. Musk acknowledged the request but mentioned that the initiative depends on government approval.
