A significant enhancement is coming to WhatsApp users on Android. The messaging giant is currently testing a built-in document scanning feature that could render external apps like CamScanner unnecessary.
According to information uncovered in the latest beta version (2.25.18.29) distributed through the Google Play Beta Program, the feature will allow users to scan physical documents using their smartphone camera, then send them instantly through WhatsApp chats.
This tool mirrors the document scanner WhatsApp introduced for iOS earlier this year. The Android version, now in development, is expected to function similarly, offering both manual and automatic scanning options.
- Manual mode gives users control over the capture moment—useful for aligning documents perfectly.
- Automatic mode leverages document detection algorithms to scan instantly once the page is in view.
After the image is captured, it is automatically transformed into a PDF file, optimized for sharing. The scanning and conversion take place entirely on the device via Android’s built-in APIs. This ensures that the process remains private, fast, and secure. Files will only be shared when the user actively sends them, and they remain protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption.

Currently, the feature is not available to the wider public. However, the presence of this capability in beta testing suggests that a full release may arrive in an upcoming update.
For users who frequently need to digitize receipts, forms, contracts, or handwritten notes, this update streamlines the process significantly—making WhatsApp more than just a messaging app, but a productivity tool for everyday life.
