OpenAI has unveiled a groundbreaking update to ChatGPT, marking a major step in transforming the AI tool into a fully interactive digital assistant capable of performing real-world tasks such as booking flights, creating playlists, and finding homes.
The update, announced during OpenAI’s annual Developer Day in San Francisco, introduces the new Apps SDK (Software Development Kit), allowing ChatGPT to connect directly with popular third-party platforms. Users can now interact with services like Spotify, Booking.com, Canva, and Zillow — all without leaving the chat interface.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman introduced the feature before an audience of developers, highlighting that ChatGPT will now be able to handle practical tasks like planning trips, organizing music, or browsing property listings. “The models are there now,” Altman said, emphasizing that the company waited until its technology had matured enough to deliver this seamless integration.
The initial rollout includes partnerships with major platforms such as Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Canva, Spotify, and Booking.com. Additional integrations with Uber, AllTrails, and DoorDash are expected later this year. However, the feature is currently unavailable in Europe due to ongoing regulatory reviews around AI and data privacy.
This update effectively shifts ChatGPT from being a conversational assistant to a task-oriented tool. For instance, users can type, “Spotify, make a playlist for my party this Friday,” and instantly receive a curated music list. Similarly, when discussing travel plans, ChatGPT can access Booking.com or Expedia to recommend hotels, while home buyers can view real estate listings from Zillow directly within the chat window.
OpenAI President Greg Brockman noted that the same advancements driving the company’s achievements in AI benchmarks are now being applied to practical business tools. He added that OpenAI aims to position ChatGPT as a robust enterprise platform capable of supporting professional workflows and digital productivity.
The announcement also arrives amid OpenAI’s ambitious expansion. Recently, the company announced plans to develop $1 trillion worth of computing infrastructure and introduced Sora, its viral AI video-generation app that quickly became a top download on Apple’s App Store.
Despite its rapid growth, Altman acknowledged that OpenAI is not yet profitable, though he said profitability is “not in my top 10 concerns.” He emphasized that the focus remains on innovation and long-term value creation.
With this update, ChatGPT is moving beyond text-based conversations and into the realm of action — a shift that could redefine how people interact with artificial intelligence in everyday life.
