Facebook users frustrated by random, irrelevant Reels can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Tech giant Meta has rolled out a major update to Facebook’s recommendation algorithm, giving users greater control over the short-form videos they see. The move aims to make Facebook’s Reels experience more personalized, relevant, and competitive with platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts.

The new update lets users mark any Reel as “Not Interested” or flag unwanted comments, prompting the platform’s AI to instantly recalibrate future recommendations. Meta says this change will help reduce repetitive, low-quality, or off-topic videos — a common complaint among Facebook users.

In a statement, Meta explained that the goal is to create a more dynamic and personalized Reels feed, tailored to each individual’s interests and engagement patterns. The company also emphasized that the update reflects ongoing efforts to refine its AI-driven recommendation systems and ensure that users enjoy a more seamless and relevant viewing experience.

Alongside the algorithm tweak, Facebook has improved its Save feature, allowing users to collect and organize their favorite Reels and posts more efficiently. This makes it easier to revisit or share content without endless scrolling, giving users more control over their digital space.

Meta also announced that the platform’s algorithm will now prioritize fresher content, meaning users will see up to 50% more Reels uploaded within the same day. This shift is designed to make Facebook’s video feed feel more up-to-date, reflecting real-time trends rather than recycling older posts.

To boost engagement, Meta has introduced AI-powered search suggestions within Facebook Reels. Much like TikTok’s keyword prompts, these suggestions appear subtly on videos, encouraging users to explore related topics such as trending challenges, viral music, or popular creators. This feature not only enhances discoverability but also keeps users within the Facebook ecosystem longer.

Another addition, “friend bubbles,” will make the feed more interactive. Small profile icons will appear on Reels and posts showing which friends have liked or interacted with the content. Tapping a bubble opens a private chat, allowing users to discuss content directly, mirroring the real-time social dynamic found on Instagram.

These updates are part of Meta’s broader push into AI-driven entertainment, following the launch of “Vibes,” a new short-form video feed exclusively featuring AI-generated clips within the Meta AI app. By refining personalization tools and integrating smarter discovery features, Meta aims to reassert Facebook’s relevance in the fast-evolving social video landscape.

With this rollout, Facebook not only improves the user experience but also positions itself as a serious contender in the global short-form video market — one where control, customization, and connection increasingly define success.
