Huawei and Qualcomm Sign Multi-Year Patent Licensing Agreement Covering 5G and AI

Huawei and Qualcomm have entered into a broad, multi-year patent cross-licensing agreement covering several major areas of technology, including 5G, computing, artificial intelligence and networking.

The agreement represents a significant development in the relationship between the two technology companies. It is also the first licensing arrangement between Huawei and Qualcomm to include 5G technology alongside other technological fields.

Under the agreement, both companies will gain licensing rights related to their respective patent portfolios. Such arrangements allow technology companies to use patented innovations while creating a framework for continued cooperation in the development and commercialization of advanced technologies.

Qualcomm to Acquire Huawei US Patents

As part of the deal, Qualcomm will acquire a number of US patents from Huawei. The patents cover innovations related to computing, artificial intelligence, networking and other areas of technology.

The transaction is separate from the broader cross-licensing arrangement and is subject to the required regulatory approvals.

The planned acquisition is particularly notable because Huawei has remained under US trade restrictions since 2019. As a result, the transaction is expected to receive scrutiny from relevant US authorities before it can be completed.

The agreement highlights the importance of intellectual property in the global technology industry. Companies involved in telecommunications, semiconductor development, artificial intelligence and networking often maintain extensive patent portfolios covering technologies used across modern devices and infrastructure.

The inclusion of 5G in the latest agreement adds another important dimension to the deal. 5G technology remains central to next-generation telecommunications networks, while computing, AI and networking technologies continue to expand into smartphones, cloud services, enterprise systems and connected devices.

For Huawei and Qualcomm, the multi-year agreement provides a structured framework for managing their respective intellectual property rights across several key technology sectors.

The regulatory review will now be an important step in determining how and when the patent transaction can move forward. The outcome could also draw attention because of the broader US restrictions that have affected Huawei’s access to certain technologies and markets in recent years.
