Next Xbox Could Cost Up to $1,800 as Microsoft Reportedly Targets 2028 Release

Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox console could carry a price tag of up to $1,800, according to a report suggesting that the company is targeting a 2028 launch for its upcoming gaming hardware. If the reported estimates prove accurate, the next Xbox could represent a significant investment for gamers compared with previous console generations.

The console, reportedly known internally by the codename Project Helix, is said to have an estimated hardware cost ranging between $1,200 and $1,800. However, these figures are not confirmed retail prices, and Microsoft has not officially announced the final price or release date.

The reported estimates have drawn attention because they would place the next Xbox in a considerably higher price bracket than traditional gaming consoles. Such a price could influence purchasing decisions, particularly among players who are accustomed to buying dedicated gaming systems at lower prices.

One important distinction is that the reported figures may reflect internal hardware cost projections rather than the amount consumers will eventually pay. Console manufacturers can choose to subsidise hardware, absorb some production costs or use different pricing strategies to make their products more accessible.

Microsoft could therefore decide to sell Project Helix for less than its estimated hardware cost. Alternatively, the company could position the system as a premium gaming device if its specifications and capabilities justify a higher price.

The reported 2028 release target also suggests that consumers may still have to wait before the company reveals the final design, technical specifications and commercial details. Until Microsoft provides official confirmation, the timing should be treated as a reported target rather than a guaranteed launch date.
