Amazon’s Project Kuiper to Launch Satellite Broadband in Pakistan by 2026

Amazon’s Project Kuiper to Launch Satellite Broadband in Pakistan by 2026

Pakistan is set to take a major leap toward digital transformation as Amazon’s Project Kuiper prepares to roll out satellite broadband services in the country by the end of 2026 under its Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite programme.

The development was announced by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) following a meeting between Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja and a delegation from Amazon’s Project Kuiper.

Project Kuiper, a multi-billion-dollar global initiative by Amazon, aims to expand high-speed internet access worldwide, particularly in remote and underserved regions. Pakistan has been identified as one of the key countries where the project will establish operations to strengthen connectivity and support the government’s Digital Pakistan vision.

Federal Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja welcomed Amazon’s decision, describing it as “a major step forward in promoting digital inclusion and ensuring nationwide access to affordable and reliable broadband.” She emphasized that the initiative aligns with Pakistan’s strategy to become a digitally empowered economy and to close the connectivity gap between urban and rural areas.

As part of its rollout plan, Project Kuiper will establish ground-based infrastructure in Pakistan, including gateway stations and points of presence (PoPs) to ensure seamless, high-speed connectivity. The system will operate through a constellation of up to 3,236 satellites, providing broadband speeds of up to 400 Mbps through affordable user terminals.

The collaboration is expected to bring significant benefits to Pakistan’s IT and telecom sectors, enhancing innovation, fostering digital entrepreneurship, and creating new employment opportunities. MoITT reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating partnerships with global technology firms to advance the Prime Minister’s vision for a connected and inclusive Pakistan.

The announcement follows Amazon’s successful launch of its first 27 Kuiper satellites into orbit from Florida earlier this year. The satellites mark the beginning of Amazon’s ambitious plan to deploy a global satellite network to rival SpaceX’s Starlink.

Launched aboard an Atlas V rocket from the United Launch Alliance (ULA) at Cape Canaveral, the mission represents Amazon’s largest investment in space infrastructure to date. With a planned network of thousands of satellites, Kuiper aims to deliver broadband internet to consumers, businesses, and governments across the world — especially in areas where traditional connectivity options are limited.

Amazon’s entry into Pakistan’s broadband landscape could redefine the country’s digital ecosystem, providing fast, reliable, and affordable internet access to millions while positioning Pakistan as a leader in satellite-based communication technology in South Asia.
