A newly disclosed Linux security vulnerability has raised concerns among cybersecurity experts after researchers revealed that more than 16.4 million systems worldwide could potentially be affected. The flaw could allow attackers with a normal local user account to gain complete control of vulnerable devices.
Cybersecurity firm Qualys identified the critical vulnerability, which has been tracked as CVE-2026-64600 and named RefluXFS. The issue was discovered by the Qualys Threat Research Unit during research that also involved the use of Anthropic’s Claude Mythos Preview as part of the analysis process.
The vulnerability affects the Linux kernel, which serves as the core component of Linux-based operating systems. According to Qualys, RefluXFS is linked to a race condition within the XFS filesystem. A race condition occurs when multiple processes attempt to access or modify system resources at nearly the same time, causing unexpected behavior if operations are not handled in the correct sequence.
Cybercriminals can sometimes exploit race conditions to bypass security protections and perform actions that should normally be restricted. In the case of RefluXFS, attackers may be able to exploit weaknesses in the system’s handling of certain file operations to achieve elevated privileges.
The vulnerability specifically impacts the copy-on-write mechanism used by the XFS filesystem. Copy-on-write technology improves efficiency by allowing multiple copies of data to share the same underlying information until one version needs to be modified. When a change is required, the system creates a separate copy instead of immediately duplicating all data.
While this approach improves performance and saves storage resources, security flaws in its implementation can create opportunities for attackers. Researchers found that the RefluXFS issue could potentially allow a local user with limited permissions to escalate privileges and obtain administrative control over an affected machine.
