Google has officially introduced Tap to Share, a new Quick Share feature designed to make sharing content between compatible Android phones faster and more convenient.

The feature allows supported devices to exchange contacts, photos, videos and other content simply by bringing the phones together. Its functionality closely resembles Apple’s NameDrop experience, giving Android users a similar device-to-device sharing option.

Tap to Share is being introduced as part of Google’s Quick Share platform, which already allows Android users to transfer files and other content between compatible devices. The new feature adds a more intuitive way to initiate sharing by physically bringing supported phones close to one another.

The technology could make everyday content sharing easier for users who frequently exchange photos, videos or contact information. Instead of navigating through menus and manually selecting nearby devices, users can use the tap-based approach where supported hardware and software are available.

Google is initially rolling out Tap to Share to Pixel smartphones starting with the Pixel 6. This means owners of relatively recent Pixel devices will be among the first Android users able to access the new functionality.

Samsung devices are also joining the rollout. Google has confirmed support for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8, bringing the feature to Samsung’s latest foldable smartphone lineup.

More Android phones are expected to receive Tap to Share by the end of 2026. The broader rollout could make the feature significantly more useful as compatibility expands across manufacturers and device models.

The introduction also highlights the growing similarities between Android and iOS when it comes to convenient device-to-device interactions. Apple introduced NameDrop as part of iOS 17, allowing users to bring compatible iPhones or Apple Watches close together to share contact information.

Google’s Tap to Share takes a similar approach within the Android ecosystem. By integrating the functionality into Quick Share, Google can build on an existing sharing system rather than requiring users to install a separate application.

For Android users, the feature could be particularly useful in situations where quick sharing is needed. Sharing a contact at an event, sending photos to a friend or transferring other supported content could become a simple matter of bringing two compatible phones together.

The initial device support remains limited, so not every Android smartphone will be able to use Tap to Share immediately. However, the expected expansion throughout 2026 could significantly increase its reach.

Google’s latest Quick Share update represents another step toward making wireless file and contact sharing more seamless on Android. As more manufacturers adopt the technology, Tap to Share could become a standard part of the Android sharing experience.
