ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued an advisory urging all married Pakistani citizens to promptly update their marital status in its official records to avoid potential legal and administrative complications.
According to officials, many citizens across the country have completed their marriage registration with the Union Council, yet have failed to update their status in NADRA’s database, resulting in discrepancies across various official documents.
“It is important for every married individual to ensure that their marital status is accurately reflected in NADRA’s records,”
said a senior NADRA official. “This helps prevent issues in areas such as inheritance, visa applications, passport renewals, and family registration certificates.”
Why updating marital status matters
NADRA maintains the central database for Pakistan’s citizens, linking information such as national identity cards (CNICs), family trees, and biometric records. Updating marital details ensures that records remain accurate, traceable, and legally valid across all government databases.
Authorities explained that when citizens fail to update their records, inconsistencies often emerge between their CNIC and Union Council marriage certificates, leading to avoidable delays in government and legal procedures.
The issue has become particularly relevant as more government institutions — including the passport office, immigration department, and banks — rely on NADRA’s verification system for authentication.
Officials further clarified that divorced or widowed individuals are also required to update their marital status in NADRA’s system to maintain accurate demographic data and avoid misrepresentation in official documentation.
Simplified update process
NADRA has made it easier for citizens to update their information by visiting any nearby NADRA registration center. Applicants are required to bring:
- A copy of the Union Council-issued marriage certificate
- Original CNICs of both spouses
- Updated family registration certificates (FRC) if applicable
The data is digitally updated within the national database once the verification process is complete.
“NADRA has streamlined the process to ensure that citizens can make updates without inconvenience,”
the spokesperson added. “It takes only a few minutes to bring your record up to date.”
Public urged to act promptly
The advisory comes amid NADRA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its national identity management system and ensure data consistency across public records.
Authorities have encouraged citizens to spread awareness within their families and communities, emphasizing that keeping records current is not only a legal responsibility but also a key step toward a secure and transparent digital identity ecosystem in Pakistan.
