Google Expands Gemini AI in Maps for Hands-Free Navigation

Google has rolled out a significant upgrade to its navigation service, Google Maps, by expanding its Gemini AI-powered feature to provide hands-free navigation for pedestrians and cyclists. Initially launched in November 2025 for drivers, this feature enables users to navigate using voice commands without taking their hands off the wheel.

The Gemini AI model enhances the Maps experience by offering real-time, conversational guidance, allowing travelers to focus on the road or path ahead. With the latest expansion, pedestrians and cyclists can now benefit from the same voice-activated navigation assistance, making trips safer and more convenient.

According to Google, the feature is being gradually introduced across the globe. Users in regions where Gemini AI is supported can access the enhanced functionality through the Google Maps app on Android and iOS devices. The company emphasized that this hands-free AI assistant will not be available on the web version of Google Maps.

This update reflects Google’s ongoing efforts to integrate advanced artificial intelligence into everyday services. By extending Gemini AI to a broader audience, Google aims to make navigation smarter, safer, and more intuitive for all types of journeys, whether by car, bicycle, or on foot.
